The Art of Love, Boat

I just found out Andy Warhol had a guest spot opposite Tom Bosely on The Love Boat in the late 70's. I had to share.

I made the mistake of watching Factory Girl last week. (Can I have those 2 hours of my life back please?) It was a pretty bad movie but it opened up a whole new can of worms, or can of Campbell's soup, regarding Warhol for me. I have be
en questioning how someone can be a fan of art when the person who made it is morally questionable? Is morality as subjective as art? I suspected that Warhol was a bitchy queen to say the least, but the truth is that he habitually used people, and was a vapid and shallow man. I pulled out a book I have on him, mostly artwork, with a timeline and short history of his life in the back. In the end I have been feeling sorry for him. He had a hard life of childhood poverty and religious guilt. In some ways I can even relate to his 1st generation immigrant struggle as a creative person. And ultimately I am moved by his vision of art, especially in the context of his generation. Here is a favorite:Eggs by Andy Warhol c.1982

The obsession with jumping has grown recently. We jump at home, at the store, in the park, on the bed. We jump into water, over brooms, into puddles. He even asks for jump while he is sleeping, "brinca?" He likes it when we say WOW after a jump and sometimes gets upset if I don't WOW loud enough. It must be so great to finally discover your body and all it is capable of. Here is some footage of Nico and his newest floor routine. Modern Dance meets Toddler Chic.

Nico is into Models

We escaped the heat wave recently by ducking into our local mall in "beautiful downtown Burbank." I let Nico walk the entire mall as I chased behind him in and out of stores. He walked right into Old Navy, who had a group of mannequins standing as greeters upfront. Nico seemed so concerned for this little girl. He tried talking to her, pet her head, shook her, and finally gave her one good slap. " Snap out of it!" In the end Nico had to be carted away kicking and screaming while she just stood there staring.

Craft Fair Recap

Anne Freeman and I checked out the LA renegade Craft Fair on July 11th. Also lovingly called the "Aggressive Craft Fair" by Anne's better half Warren and the "Really Gay Craft Fair" by one Tim Gavin. To be fair, Tim just misheard me on the phone. But the name stuck.

Once the elevator doors opened on the 13th floor of the Mart in downtown, Anne and I were pretty giddy. We were so nervous we would miss a booth, that we devised a nerdy walking plan to make sure we didn't. Anne is such a good friend that we picked up right where we left off. We had deep life conversation amongst the oohing and aahing. We gossiped and gave advice while we shopped for nick nacks. Pure Heaven. (Thanks to Aaron for babysitting Nico)

There were lots of owls and ironic mustaches to be had at the fair. Amazing baby clothes and inexpensive and original art. There was a girl with a
microphone inside a "postcard booth" who with her best robot voice sold $2 postcards and made us laugh really hard. I bought a garden stake, stickers, a cloth lunch bag for Aaron, a Diego and Frida Tote for groceries, and an apron emblazoned with the Sweet Meats logo on it. Aaron says that when I wear the apron, my cooking tastes better. Worth every penny.

It was a really inspiring event. I loved seeing a generation of people happy to "make it themselves." I took lots of notes and I am hoping to channel my inner Martha and get crafting this year. Anne, bring your gluegun and pom poms.

Welcome Back Kotter

"It's been a long time, we shuddna left you, without a dope beat to step to..."
Or, so the song goes.

Sorry for the lag in posts. I had a major technical malfunction, which led to a new iphone. Upside: More video posts. The new S series phone is amazing, and the video is incredibly sharp. We have been up to lots of good tricks lately. The most noteworthy is that Nico is on Day 6 of night weaning. Dada puts him to sleep. I'm not even remotely involved. The freedom is such a strange concoction of guilt and independence, its still too new to be processed correctly. I'm so excited to enter a new phase of BigBoyhood. I am sure there are lots of surprises up ahead. Thank you to Abui who put the plan in action and sacraficed her vacation to sleep in the hippy bed so that her first born could fix her first born. I love you Ma.

Here is a sampling of the my new iphone: Nico playing "BRINCA!" at the bookstore, trying desperately to get the older boy's attention with his fancy footwork.

Daddy Day Care

Aaron found this amazing video via weloveyouso.com
Nico is really into it. He always asks for "mas" when it ends.
I love that dada finds these gems for his mijo.
I hope your kiddo likes it too.

Fourth of July

We spent our Independence day in the company of great friends. Eric, Ashlee and baby June invited us to their gorgeous house for grilling and good times. After some turkey burgers and potato salad we went for a dip in the pool, baby toys and all. Nico swam with Hal, Sunny and Deetric. He was in awe of Eric who was cannonballing from the diving board. Nico loves jumping in from the edge of the pool. He even tries to outrun me so that I can't catch him, as if he knew how to swim! That daredevil in him is not from my dna.

It's so nice to know we have so many friends taking the same parenting journey we are... there is comfort in the collective rookiness of it all. Hope everyone had a great 4th!
